A recent New York Times article, “Private Equity Finds a New Source of Profit: Volunteer Fire Departments”, has brought a critical issue to light: the increasing unaffordability of essential fire records management software (Fire RMS) for volunteer fire departments (VFDs).
The article highlights how investment firms are acquiring legacy software providers and dramatically increasing prices, putting a strain on the already tight budgets of rural and volunteer agencies.
As the Times notes, 'With industry upheaval, volunteer fire departments are losing access to software tools and scrambling to find affordable alternatives.'
Responserack is the affordable Fire RMS specifically designed for volunteer fire departments.

This trend validates the very reason Responserack was created. It wasn’t just because Fire RMS software prices were rising, but because these systems were aging, clunky, and were never designed for volunteer fire departments in the first place. Volunteer Fire Departments deserve software built for their unique needs, not the over-complicated, expensive leftovers from big-city career departments.
For too long, VFDs have been forced to adapt to software that doesn’t fit their workflow. They’ve dealt with complex, non-intuitive screens and features they’ll never use, all while paying a premium. The software became a chore for the few in the back office, rather than a tool for the entire department.
Responserack was built on a different philosophy: software should serve the volunteer.
While the market consolidation and price hikes described by the New York Times are a major concern, they also present an opportunity for departments to re-evaluate their tools. It’s a chance to move away from legacy systems that were never the right fit and embrace a modern alternative that empowers the entire team.
Volunteer firefighters deserve tools that make their jobs easier, not harder. They deserve a system that respects their time and their department’s budget. That’s the commitment we made when we started Responserack, and it’s a commitment we stand by today.
