The landscape of fire incident reporting in the U.S. is undergoing a significant transformation, and at Responserack, we’re incredibly proud to be at the forefront, particularly for our invaluable volunteer fire departments. We’re pleased to announce that Responserack is submitting fire incident reports directly to the new National Emergency Response Information System (NERIS) on behalf of our customers, while simultaneously continuing to support NFIRS.
This isn’t just a technical achievement; it’s a testament to our commitment to empowering volunteer firefighters with tools that are not only compliant but also genuinely easier to use.
NERIS Reporting …
For decades, the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) has been the bedrock of fire data collection. While it served its purpose, NFIRS, with its intricate codes and sometimes counter-intuitive questions, often presented a significant administrative burden, especially for volunteer departments with limited resources and time. Firefighters, often tired after a long call, faced a system that felt more like a bureaucratic hurdle than a helpful data collection tool.
Enter NERIS. The National Emergency Response Information System is the U.S. Fire Administration’s answer to modernizing fire data. It’s designed to be more comprehensive, more flexible, and crucially, more firefighter-friendly.
From our early experience working with the NERIS production system, we can confidently say: NERIS is simpler. The questions are more intuitive, more firefighter-friendly.
This isn’t just a slight improvement; it’s a fundamental shift in how data is collected. Instead of navigating complex code trees and trying to decipher obscure categories, NERIS asks questions in a way that makes sense to someone who just returned from an incident. It feels more like a natural conversation about what happened, rather than a rigid form-filling exercise. This dramatically reduces the learning curve and the potential for errors, allowing volunteer firefighters to spend less time on paperwork and more time on training, community engagement, or simply resting.
Being among the first to successfully submit incident reports to NERIS for volunteer fire departments has been an insightful journey. It involved close collaboration, rigorous testing, and a deep understanding of both the technical intricacies of NERIS and the practical needs of volunteer firefighters.
We’ve leveraged this experience to ensure that Responserack seamlessly bridges the gap between the on-the-ground reality of an incident and the requirements of national reporting. Our system takes the simplified, intuitive input from your firefighters and expertly translates it into the necessary NERIS format, ensuring compliance without the headache.
What does this mean for volunteer fire departments across the U.S. fire service?
We are committed to continuing our work at the cutting edge of fire service technology, making sure that volunteer fire departments, the backbone of so many communities, have the very best tools at their disposal. The move to NERIS is a significant step forward, and we’re proud to be your trusted partner in this journey.
