NERIS Data Exchange V1 Compatibility Badge
Improve your Volunteer Fire Department readiness in 2026.

As 2026 dawns, the transition to the National Emergency Response Information System (NERIS) is the next big challenge for fire departments. If you’re a Fire Chief, you might be wondering what this change really means for your department and, more importantly, for your firefighters.

The good news is, the transition to NERIS doesn’t have to be complicated.

Key Deadlines and Your To-Do List

As we enter 2026, NFIRS will be officially decommissioned. Here are the hard deadlines you need to know:

  • January 1, 2026: All new incident reporting must be done through NERIS. No new incidents for 2026 can be submitted to the old NFIRS system.
  • January 31, 2026: This is the absolute final day to make any edits or modifications to your 2025 incident data within NFIRS.
  • February 2026: The NFIRS system will be decommissioned permanently.

Bare Minimum Compliance for a Smooth Transition:

  1. Complete Onboarding: Ensure your department has completed the NERIS onboarding process. This involves setting up your department’s account and assigning administrators.
  2. Export Historical Data: NERIS will not automatically import your old NFIRS data. Your department is responsible for exporting historical incident data from NFIRS to comply with local records retention policies.
  3. Choose Your Reporting Tool: Decide whether you will use the government-provided NERIS application or a NERIS-compliant third-party software vendor. The right software will be your bridge to compliance.

Your Firefighters Don’t Need to be NERIS Experts

One thing to know is that your firefighters should not have to learn a complex new reporting system. Their focus should remain on responding to emergencies, not wrestling with data entry. The key to a successful transition is choosing the right software—one that handles the complexities of NERIS behind the scenes.

Choose Software That Simplifies, Not Complicates

Your department’s reporting software should act as a simple, intuitive bridge to NERIS. Firefighters should be able to enter incident data in plain language, and the software should take care of the rest. This approach minimizes the training burden and ensures a smooth migration.

At Responserack, we’ve designed our system with this principle at its core. We make NERIS reporting straightforward, allowing your team to focus on what they do best. As you prepare for 2026, make the smart choice for your department and let modern software handle the heavy lifting.
